There are scenes in that movie that exemplify what it means to be an American.

Spirit - Never give up never surrender

Just like the skinny Captain Rodgers started out, even though no one wanted him, he never quit, he never gave up.

Smart - Often physical strength can be over come by a smarter person

When everyone else failed to use their brawn to climb up the flagpole in one of the early scenes in the movie, Rodgers used his brains, exhausted and tired, he used his intellect to conquer the situation by pulling the pin from the flag pole and removing the flag after the pole had fallen to the ground.  Brains over brawn.

Sacrifice - Willing to do what must be done, even at one's own peril

When a grenade is thrown into the middle of a group of soldiers during training, everyone runs away, except Rodgers, who jumps on the grenade and yells, "Get away!  Get back!", ready to sacrifice himself for his fellow man.

What does all of this come down to?

Patriotism, heroism and faith.

That is who all of us, who call ourselves "Americans", should exemplify every day.

There are several groups, that do that every single day for the rest of us.

Police Officers

Firefighters

EMS Personnel

Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, Sailors and Coasties.

The next time you see any of these, stop, engage and give your thanks for their sacrifice to keep you safe every single day.
