People have forgotten how to laugh. The comedies of yester-year are now open targets for anyone looking to practice this new "cancel culture." You want to talk about shows that had racist over-tones? The Jefferson's and All In The Family surely qualify. That being said, during the years that those shows aired, all of us, regardless of skin color, could identify with the struggles of George Jefferson and Archie Bunker. It actually made us feel in touch with those characters. We laughed and we cried as we watch them progress through their challenges. Today, no one dares to produce a show that would take on today's news and the common workers struggles in a comedy the way those shows did back then. Except maybe Chapelle, he has no filter.
Back then, The Dukes of Hazard was one of my favorite shows. I had just joined the Navy and remember watching the show with both black and white sailors in the same room. We all laughed and enjoyed the humor, the drama and the cars, especially the General Lee, wishing we had a car that cool. I drove a 1979 Ford Fiesta that was literally held together by chicken wire. Not kidding. I am saddened today that the current young adult generation wants to remove everything they don't agree with, or even more so, what they don't understand. Tearing down monuments, statues, free speech and now TV shows and even cartoon characters. Elmer Fudd, really?
So to answer your question John, no, your show was not racist, there was no racist intent, there was no battle cry against any group, there wasn't a single bad bone in the success that the show had and continues to have today. If anything, maybe it's time to bring a new show to bear, "The Grand Kids of The Dukes of Hazard." I wonder though if it would be the same as the original with the General Lee being a Tesla being driven in Ludicrous Mode. Well, we'll probably never know. Good luck sir, and don't you buy into that "white guilt" shtick either.
